But what do the indices that define SPF mean and how can they be "read"?
The index indicated on the bottle is used to understandhow long the SPF protection itself lasts in case of sun exposure.This number (6, 10, 15, 30, 45, 50) basically acts as a multiplier of the time of protected exposure, which varies according to the phototype of the person using it and according to the intensity of the rays.
Here's how it's calculated: if your skin tends to get irritated after 10 minutes of exposure to the sun's rays (therefore UVA+UVB), the duration of the protection offered by the different SPFs results from the following "multiplication":
SPF 6 10 x 6= 60 minutes
SPF 10 10x 10 = 100 minutes.
It should be noted, however, that sweating, showering or bathing on the beach can reduce the protection time.
The initial data indicating how long it takes for your skin to become irritated by the sun, as mentioned above, is subjective and depends on your phototype and the intensity of the sun's rays.
